Our Lady of Mariazell Sculpture, 18th C.

Large early 18th Century hand carved wooden sculpture of the so called Our Lady of Mariazell. Hand carved in lime wood with the original polychromy. Underneath there is a part of the old iron pin on which she was once mounted, probably in the cloister or church where she was worshipped.  Height 54 cm.

Nestled high in the Alpine mountains of Austria, the Shrine of Our Lady of Mariazell (also the Basilica Mariä Geburt or the Basilica of the Birth of the Virgin Mary), is the most-visited Marian shrine in Central Europe, receiving about a million pilgrims each year. In the church, a 12th century wooden image of the Virgin Mary is honored. The object of veneration is a miracle-working image of the Virgin, which is only 48 centimeters high and carved from lime wood.

Condition: Fair condition, wear consistent with age and/or use (missing parts, repairs and old woodworm holes and woord rot).
